Standard six hook sabiki for filling the live bait tank or the burley bucket. Pink flasher on each hook, small enough for pickers but strong enough to lift a slimy over the side.

We run these off the back of the boat while the first rods are going out. Drop it into a bait school, give it a slow lift and drop, and you generally know within a minute whether the fish are there.

What they catch: pilchards, slimy mackerel, yakkas, garfish, sprats, small salmon and pike. Anything schooling around jetties, marker poles and bait balls.

How to fish them: small sinker on the bottom, drop to the school (a sounder helps but isn't essential), then slow lift and drop. Don't strike. Let the fish hook themselves and wind steadily once you feel weight. Fish will often load up two or three at a time.

Picking a size

  • 8# (hook 12mm long, 6mm wide). Small stuff. Sprats, small garfish, tiny yakkas, picky bait schools.
  • 10# (hook 15mm long, 6mm wide). The all rounder. Slimies, yakkas, standard pilchards. Start here if you're unsure.
  • 12# (hook 17mm long, 8mm wide). Bigger baits. Larger slimies, small salmon, pike.

If you're only buying one, go 10#. It covers most of what swims past in the bay.

  • 6 hooks per rig with pink flasher on each
  • Available in 8#, 10# and 12#
  • For pilchards, slimies, yakkas, garfish and other bay baitfish
  • Pre-tied and ready to fish, just add a sinker
