Squid don't ask for much. Get a jig in front of them at the right depth, give it a couple of sharp lifts, and let it hang. The trick is having the right size for the water you're fishing and a colour that shows up in the light you've got.

We use these ourselves over the weed in Port Phillip Bay, and we've priced them so you can carry a spread of sizes and colours instead of rationing two jigs and hoping.

Choosing a size

Size is mostly about depth and how fast you want the jig on the bottom.

  • 1.8: Tiny and slow-sinking. For shallow water, spooky squid over clear sand and weed, and light line off the rocks or a jetty.
  • 2.5: The all-rounder. Ideal in 1–4 metres, and the one to reach for when squid are looking at your jig and turning away.
  • 3.0: A half-step up. Handy when there's a bit of wind or run and the 2.5 won't hold its line.
  • 3.5: The Victorian standard. Most calamari jigs sold in this state are 3.5s, and for good reason, it covers 3–8 metres comfortably and gets eaten by big squid.
  • 4.0: Deep water and strong tide. Gets down fast when you're drifting the deeper edges or fishing a run.

Choosing a colour

  • Green/Gold: Bright days and dirty water. Gold flashes hard in sunlight.
  • Green/Pink: Good middle ground when you can't pick a side.
  • Orange: Discoloured water, overcast days, stirred-up shallows after a blow.
  • Pink/Gold: The safe first cast. If we only took one, it'd be this.
  • Purple: Clear water and high sun, when squid are being fussy and a natural tone works better than a loud one.
  • Pink: Dawn, dusk and low light. Holds its visibility when everything else goes flat.

If you're starting from scratch, a 2.5 and a 3.5 in Pink/Gold will catch you squid. Everything after that is covering conditions.
